Guam -- Local labor officials are reacting to a foreign news report that efforts to bring workers to Guam from the Philippines ahead of the pending military buildup have hit a snag.
A newspaper in the Philippines is reporting that labor officials there and on Guam still have to resolve whether employers will have to pay for workers' food and housing while they are here. The report cites a Filipino labor official who says Guam has different rules when it comes to food and housing for foreign workers. However, officials with Guam's Department of Labor today downplayed suggestions that there is a conflict when it comes to those requirements. They say the only real difference in the rules they have seen involves paid vacation time, which is required by rules in the Philippines but not on Guam.
Meanwhile, Department of Labor staff say they expect thousands of workers from the Philippines will come to Guam for the buildup. They add the department will work with officials in the Philippines to solve any problems as they arise.
